pH-neutral soap: is it really necessary for skin care?

A much discussed aspect of soap use is the pH value, which describes the acidic or basic character of a substance. The normal pH of the skin is between 4.5 and 5.5, which makes it slightly acidic. This acidic pH is important because it protects the skin from harmful bacteria and environmental influences and supports the skin's barrier function. On the other hand, most soaps have an alkaline pH, which can disrupt the skin's natural pH.

Temporal limitation of the pH change

It is important to understand that the disturbance of the pH of the skin caused by the use of soap is usually short and temporary. The soap is washed off the skin after cleansing, so the alkaline pH is only effective for a short time. In addition, it must be noted that the use of simple soaps such as curd soap is rare. We usually use soaps with nourishing additives such as essential oils, which have a tremendous nourishing effect and far outweigh the short-term pH disturbance.

The importance of overgreasing natural soap

Another factor that plays an important role in choosing the right soap is overgeasing. Replenishing soaps are made with an excess of oils that have a protective and nourishing effect on the skin. This counteracts possible dehydration of the skin. When choosing a soap, it should therefore be ensured that it is refatting in order to optimally care for the skin.

The cosmetic and medical industry argument

It is also important to understand the motivation behind some claims. In the cosmetic and medical industry, there is an interest in selling more complex and expensive products. Therefore, it is often argued that only pH-neutral soaps are suitable for skin care in order to promote more expensive alternatives. In fact, the use of pH-neutral soap is not mandatory, as moisturising soaps with nourishing additives are an excellent alternative and can provide optimal care for the skin.

Less is more: natural care for dry and sensitive skin

Especially for people with dry and sensitive skin, the motto "less is more" often applies. It is advisable to concentrate on a few, carefully selected ingredients that have proven positive effects on the skin and are used in a sustainably caring composition. Natural soaps that are free from harmful chemicals and artificial fragrances can be an ideal choice for skin care. With the right soap, the skin can be gently cleansed and optimally cared for at the same time.

Careful selection of soap is crucial

In summary, it can be seen that the use of pH-neutral soap is not absolutely necessary. What is important is the careful selection of soap that contains moisturising properties and nourishing additives to provide the best possible care for the skin. Natural soaps with high-quality ingredients can gently cleanse the skin while moisturising it without permanently disturbing the skin's pH. It is advisable to pay attention to the needs of your own skin and choose a soap that meets individual requirements. With the right care, we can reap the benefits of soaps and keep our skin healthy and glowing.
